Belmont Stakes Weekend

This weekend, Saturday June 10th, Long Island will be hosting the 149th Belmont Stakes at Belmont Park in Elmont, Queens. Although a Triple Crown win is not possible this year, it’s still fun to spend a day at the races taking in the excitement and enjoying games and cocktails. And if you’d rather not travel into Queens, there are plenty of events taking place in the greater Patchogue area that you can attend near the New Village.
Attend the Belmont Stakes- Belmont Park is about an hour away from Patchogue by car, and this does not account for time spent in traffic or looking for parking. If you’re considering attending the Stakes, taking the train may be your best option. LIRR offers service to Belmont Park, though you’ll have to transfer at Jamaica Station from the Patchogue line. Tickets start at $25, though it is advised to purchase in advance due to the large volumes attending the event. While at the race, enjoy sipping cocktails and placing bets on your hopeful pick!
Watch at a Local Viewing Party- If you’re trying to avoid the large crowds at Belmont or traveling too far out of the way, consider watching the race at one of the local bars near New Village. MoMo’s Bar & Grill will be serving up a number of specialty cocktails to celebrate the event. Stop by on Saturday to enjoy their Bad Boy Lemonade, made with Jameson Irish Whiskey, lemonade, lemon and a dash of biters.
Throw a Belmont Stakes Party-Grab your finest race derby attire and invite your friends over for a Belmont Stakes Party. Host a viewing party of the race and serve food and drinks to go with the occasion. If you need inspiration, you can start by mixing the Stakes’ signature drink, the Belmont Jewel. Start with some bourbon and add a dash of sherry, orange and cranberry juice, with a hint of fresh mint. Your guests will be sure to enjoy!
