Fire Island Heats Up Patchogue!
What constitutes the perfect beach getaway? For one, a beautiful beach sprawling for several miles along a picturesque coastline, that’s sort of a given. Second, there has to be abundance of crisp and warm sand, shuffling in between and around the toes of the beachgoer. Who wouldn’t want that right? And finally, the water must be so inviting, that anyone who bestows his or her eyes upon it will be enticed to splash in its realm. Now that’s a beach getaway, but more specifically, that’s the Fire Island National Seashore.
While many commuters spend several hours traveling to Fire Island, Patchogue residents can take the Fire Island Ferries (only a few blocks away from New Village) and they can get there in just over a half hour as it is the nearest city to the island. But Fire Island is more than just a beach after a long commute; it’s a lively cultural hotspot.
There are several beaches on the island, including one that is clothing optional for a slightly braver crowd. Called the LightHouse Beach, it’s located all the way west of the seashore. Other interesting places to see, include the Fire Island Light, and what about the property of William Floyd, an American Revolutionary War General who participated in the signing of The Declaration of Independence? His residence is listed in the National Register of Historic Places situated on Mastic Beach.
Visitors are also free to check out Sailor’s Haven, which is a one and half mile trail through the Sunken Forest, or the visitor center, public marina, spectacular dining, as well as the 17 private communities that are found there. The next time you find yourself in Patchogue, take a detour to the Fire Island National Seashore, and thank us later!
