The 2018 Chinese New Year will began on Friday,
February 16th and will continue for over two weeks in typical
celebratory fashion. This year marks the Year of the Dog on the Chinese lunar
calendar, which brings promise of prosperity to those who are deserving! If
you’d like to celebrate the new year in the local Patchogue area, check out the
happenings taking place near The New Village below.
Indulge in Chinese Cuisine – What better way is
there to celebrate the Chinese New Year than by eating Chinese food! If you’ll
be dining out to celebrate the holiday, consider dining in at Yao’s Diner in
Centereach, which is known for their authentic Szechuan-style cuisine; the same
you’d find if you took an hour-plus drive into Flushing, Queens. If you’ll be
stopping in, be sure to try the spicy double-cooked pork, West Lake beef soup,
Beijing-style noodles, and sautéed Shanghai greens.
Lunar New Year Celebration at Stony Brook - The Wang Center at Stony Brook University
will be celebrating the Lunar New Year with a festival to commemorate the Year
of the Dog. The event will take place Sunday, February 18th from
2:00-6:00pm and includes New Year craft activities from China, Japan, Korea,
and Vietnam, including calligraphy demonstrations, paper cutting, origami
folding, and much more.
Practice Tai Chi – Tai Chi, an ancient Chinese
martial art originally used for defense training, is now a popular activity for
stress management. In spirit of the Chinese New Year, give Tai Chi a try at the
Water Tiger Tai Chi Studio in Medford. Classes of different levels and styles
are offered multiple times and days throughout the week.
