The Lunar New Year in Greater Patchogue

The 2019 Lunar New Year will began on Tuesday, February 5th and will continue for over two weeks in typical celebratory fashion. This year marks the Year of the Pig on the Lunar calendar, which brings promise of good fortune for those who are deserving! If you’d like to celebrate the New Year in the greater Patchogue area, check out the events taking place near the New Village below.

Red Tiger Dumpling House – Indulge in Chinese Dim Sum at Red Tiger Dumpling House in Stony Brook, voted by Newsday to be one of the best Chinese restaurants on Long Island!  Specializing in Shanghai cuisine, Red Tiger is known for their delicious soup dumplings that are made on premises, in addition to dainty shrimp dumplings, Bao buns stuffed with pork and vegetables, crispy scallion pancakes, and many other Dim Sum varieties.

Lunar New Year Celebration at Stony Brook - Each year, the Wang Center at Stony Brook University puts on a cultural celebration to celebrate the Chinese Lunar New Year. This year, the University celebrates the Year of the Pig with performances by the Department of Music, Chinese Student and Scholar Association, acrobats, local dance groups and more. The festivities start at 4:00pm on Saturday February 9th and admission to the show is free.

Practice Tai Chi – Take some time for inward thinking and meditation by practicing Tai Chi, an ancient Chinese martial art originally used for defense training that is now a popular activity for stress management. In spirit of the Chinese New Year, give Tai Chi a try at the Water Tiger Tai Chi Studio in Medford. Classes of different levels and styles are offered multiple times and days throughout the week.

  1. A bit late for this celebration, but just an aside that our friends at Water Tiger have moved. McElroy Laoshi still hosts the same great classes, just in a new location. They are now facilitating classes at 4GK Martial Arts, located at 380 East Main St in Patchogue. You can learn more about the new facility here: https://www.NotKarate.com
