A Glimpse into Long Island’s Past


This month in particular, there are numerous events happening near the New Village that look to explore Long Island’s rich history. From tours of mansions built during the roaring twenties, to exploring the history of Long Island’s many natural harbors, you’ll have the opportunity to explore local places that you have never been. If you consider yourself a history buff, you won’t want to miss some of these events happening in the greater Patchogue area below.

Oheka Castle: Historic Mansion Tours – Get a glimpse back into the Gatsby-era on the Gold Coast of Long Island by attending a historic mansion tour of Oheka Castle. Running until March 11th, these exclusive tours offer visitors access to the estate and gardens with a guided tour docent followed by homemade tea, cookies and non-alcoholic beverages.

Historic House Tour at Connetquot River State Park – You may have already been to Connetquot River State Park, located a short drive from the New Village, but have you ever wondered about the history of the historic house on the park’s premises? From now until march 18th, you’ll have the opportunity to tour the Main House of the Southside Sportsmen’s Club. A docent will discuss the history of the tavern, land, buildings, and member’s of the high society Sportmen’s Clubs. Tours run continuously and are able 45 minutes long; please arrive any time between 1pmand 3pm. Reservations are required so please call in advance.

Cruising the Land: Long Island’s Maritime Heritage – The fact that Long Island is an island makes our history unique in that we will always be influenced by the waters surrounding us. On March 24th at 2:00pm, Tara Rider, a lecturer at the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences at Stony brook University, will explore the ways in which the waters have helped create our culture as well as the land we live on. From oysters to shipwrecks and pirates, the marine environment has shaped the lives of Long Islanders for centuries. If you would like to attend, please call in advance as reservations are appreciated. Admission is free.
